THE BASICS OF RUNNING A TEAM

If you’re reading this it’s probably because you have taken on the responsibility of running one of our junior football teams. Firstly, thank you - whilst it might feel like quite a daunting task, it can also be a very rewarding one, as those of us who have been down this road before you can testify.

You probably have lots of questions - The below checklist covers the most important questions you need to ask yourself ahead of next season.

FAQ

  • Have you (and any other adults who will be helping with the team) got a valid CRB Check and Child Safe guarding Course? This is absolutely essential. This should be checked with the Club Child Welfare Officer.

  • Have all your players registered with club, League and paid their membership fees? This can be checked by emailing The Registrations Secretary Doug.

  • Do you have a first aid qualified coach associated with your team who has the FA Introduction to Coaching Football qualification or the old FA Level 1? This is absolutely essential. This should be checked with the Club Child Welfare Officer Carrie.

  • Does your team have a kit? Any problems with kit email The Club Secretary Tom.

  • Do you have parental contact details, medical information etc. for all your players?  This can be checked by emailing The Club Secretary Tom.

  • Where can I get a first aid kit, balls, bibs, cones and other equipment ?This will be porided to you by the club if you have not recieved it can be requested by using the contact us page on the website..

  • Have you been clear with parents as to how the team will be run, what they can expect from you and what you expect from them? Parents can be great for setting up goals and pitches. Try and get them involved early.

  • What is expected of myself and the players? Please make sure you read our codes of conduct and make parents and players aware of them.

  • I need ideas on coaching sessions, can the club help? Try the manuals in the coaching area, The FA Bootroom or contact The Coach Mentor Luke.

  • How do I setup a pitch? Pitches must me set up correctly for every match. Please follow guides in the coaches area.

  • How do I claim expenses? Firstly, only referees expenses can be reclaimed without prior approval from the Secretary. To claim your expenses you will need to email the Treasurer. The email must include the date and details. For example, for referee expenses to be repaid you will need to send the referee name and the match they refereed. You will of course need to provide your bank details.

  • Can anyone use a paid referee? We only cover the costs of referees in competitive matches. Or in U7s & U8s where there is only one coach. For example, a Crowborough League Match at U10s and below we would expect one of the coaches to referee as we consider it part of the player development as the coach can help with the understanding of the rules and game play. This approach of course does not translate into competitive matches at which point you can use a qualified referee.
